After snow and frost: what can we learn from the first cold spell?.

In recent weeks, we’ve experienced snow, persistent cold, and now the thaw. For many systems, this was the first real test of the winter.

During the cold spell, the Vitotherm service team did everything in their power to keep systems running. The number of malfunctions remained limited, and we were able to resolve many problems quickly by phone. In case the cold persisted or worsened, a backup plan was in place, and extra staff were on standby. This deployment proved unnecessary, which tells a lot about the reliability of our burner systems.

Not everything went smoothly. Due to the workload, our telephone service failed once, causing a customer to wait longer than expected. This is not where we stand for as a service company, so we take this very seriously. We addressed the issue immediately and resolved it. It’s these kinds of moments that demonstrate the importance of short lines of communication and clear agreements.

This first cold spell also exposed the differences between systems. We saw greenhouses with damage due to snow accumulation on the roof. Several customers experienced heat shortages due to inadequate gas contracts. And unfortunately, outdated systems also failed when they were most needed.

A thaw doesn’t mean winter is over. In the Netherlands, it can freeze and thaw, and cold weather often follows the thaw again.

If you’ve survived this period but are unsure about the reliability of your heating system, please contact us. This is the time to look ahead.

CO₂ as an integrated part of greenhouse production

Within horticulture, CO₂ plays a direct and measurable role in crop yield. It is not merely a by-product of combustion, but a functional input to the cultivation process.

Horticulture as a foundation, industry as a growth market

Horticulture has been a solid foundation for us for many years. That remains unchanged. It is a market where installations operate continuously and where daily practice leaves little room for error. You quickly see what works and what doesn’t. That reality keeps you sharp.

When a standard burner is no longer enough

In industrial projects there is always a moment where you realize that a standard burner is simply not going to solve the problem. On paper it might look sufficient. The capacity fits, the fuel type is listed, the emission class is acceptable. But once you start looking at the actual process conditions, you see that the reality is different.
